Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal

We evenutally left the Shroppie as known by the locals and entered the Birmingham Main Line Canal with its flight of 21 locks, at the Bottom Lock 21 there was a sign to say that there was a problem with a lock so they were closed for repairs. Beth decided to walk up the locks to see what she could find out. At lock 14 there was a boat going up, they had rung C&RT getting two different answers as to what was going on so they decided to head up and see how far they could get. After lunch we decided to do the same. We had planned on only doing 5 locks the first day then the rest the next but as it turned out we were on a roll so did them all - the sign we had seen should have been changed. The day was very tiring as a number of the locks were very stiff, each lock takes about 15 minutes. Eventually we turned into the Staffordshire & Worcestreshire, this is not the best part of England but suppose all countries have their less attractive areas. Weather have not been real good with day one threatening rain then day two it rained all day with a little snow as well.

Leaving the Shroppie

Help was at hand with this difficult one

Two shopping trolleys out but we were told someone had seen three and we didn't want to run over them. We only ended up finding 2 and moved on.

Note the interesting brick work, the spiralling angel and sheer size of the brick work on these bridges.

Coming into the Coseley Tunnel, nearly at the Dudley tunnel which is the second longest in England. More about that coming in another blog
